In our experience the smoothing holds for several months and fades gradually, and a single top-up session every three to six months keeps it. The change builds over the three months after a course of four sessions, as, in BTL's account, the collagen and elastin the heat set going are laid down and the skin regains elasticity, and then eases slowly unless it is topped up. Cellulite is a structural feature of the skin, so EMtone improves its appearance rather than removing it for good, and the honest measure is how the area looks at three and six months against your before photograph.
What the studies followed
- Three months: in a 2018 study of 30 women treated four times on the thighs and buttocks, specialists grading photographs without knowing which was before or after found cellulite reduced in 93% at three months, with the hips 2.3 cm and the thighs 2.1 cm smaller on average.
- Six months: a 2023 study of 30 patients (28 completed) with grade 2 or 3 cellulite found the severity score fallen from 9.1 to 4.9 at six months, with 86% satisfied and 82% saying their skin felt firmer. The thighs were 3.2 cm smaller at six months.
- Beyond six months: the published follow-up stops there, which is why we describe our own experience, the smoothing holding for several months, and plan a top-up rather than promise a year.
Why it fades, and what keeps it
The heat and the pressure energy prompt the skin, in BTL's account, to build collagen and elastin and loosen the bands that pull it into dimples, and that new tissue ages like the rest of your skin. Weight changes, hormones and age bring the dimpling back over time. A single top-up session every three to six months keeps the result, and the clinician sets the interval with you at the three-month review. BTL gives no maintenance interval of its own; this is the clinic's protocol.
What makes it last longer or shorter
A stable weight through the course and after it holds the result best, because weight gain enlarges the fat chambers that push the skin up. Moderate cellulite on the thighs and buttocks in someone whose weight is stable was the strongest responder in the studies. In our experience the deepest, most fixed dimples respond least, and loose skin after large weight loss is a different problem; the clinician tells you what fits better at the free consultation. The sessions page explains the course, and the full EMtone guide covers who it suits.
